Zuni Public Library
Bookmobile

The Zuni Public Library began its bookmobile program in 1992 (thanks to a Special Projects Grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education) to provide library services to community members who live in the outlying areas of Zuni and who don't have any means of transportation.

The first bookmobile was a passenger-sized van equipped with shelves for materials.  In 2002, after 10 years and many, many miles, the vehicle was finally retired after Cordy (Tsethlikai) drove it back from Gallup after having it serviced only to have one of the tires come off as she drove onto the Tribal Building parking lot.
She recalls this incident with a laugh so you know she wasn't injured in any way.

In 2005, through the efforts of Mr. Andrew Othole, from the Pueblo of Zuni Office of Planning and Development, and the NM State Legislature, the library was granted funds to purchase a new bookmobile.

The new bookmobile made it's debut on February 8, 2006.  The shelf space is double the size of the old bookmobile and it's also equipped with a wheelchair lift.  And it gets better, the circulation system is automated via a laptop and barcode scanner.

Its collection is a "mini" version of the main library's collection (Reference, Fiction, Nonfiction, Easy, Juvenile fiction & nonfiction, Paperbacks, etc.).  The bookmobile operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and makes scheduled stops along the outskirts of Zuni.  The Zuni Public Library is the only Native American library in New Mexico with a bookmobile.
